Astoria, Oregon was once the canning capital of the world and today, Astoria is the perfect town to begin your Oregon coast road trip. The town itself is full of history and Bowline Hotel captures that perfectly. Bowline Hotel is a modern boutique hotel located on the waterfront in the heart of Astoria, Oregon's downtown district. Before it was a hotel, it was a fish processing plant and the aesthetic throughout the hotel has industrial, maritime, and modern touches. The rooms are spacious and inviting, and the hotel’s location makes it the perfect place to stay when looking for a hotel in Astoria, Oregon.
Bowline Hotel Overview
The hotel features 40 guest rooms, including River View, Trolley View, and a variety of suites, and is steps away from local eateries and entertainment. All guests have access to an outdoor courtyard with a fire pit and chairs which are great to watch the sun set behind the Astoria Bridge with a glass of wine in hand. One of my favorite things to do at Bowline Hotel during the day is watch the sea lions swim and play in the river! They have a small platform where the sea lions nap from time to time so be sure to always pop your head over the railing when you’re heading in and out of the hotel to see if one is sunbathing or napping. Another favorite amenity that Bowline Hotel offers is their barrel saunas. The two freestanding barrel saunas sit on the waterfront and have a large window so you can look out at the river while you relax. It was the perfect way to start my day during my stay!
Aesthetically pleasing and spacious, each room has been thoughtfully designed to incorporate modern conveniences with the historic charm of Astoria. Guests can look forward to fantastic views of the Columbia River, the historic Astoria trolley tracks, and wildlife from their rooms, which have large windows that offer amazing views. No matter which room you choose, you’ll feel right at home as soon as you walk through the lobby doors and their genuinely friendly staff welcomes you!
The Features
The Bowline offers an array of amenities to make you feel at home while you're away from home. Guests have access to free WiFi throughout all areas of the property and the nicest staff I’ve probably ever encountered during my travels. Most rooms also have small patios with a seating area where you can enjoy coffee while taking in views of the Columbia River and watch ships come into port. Of course, if you get hungry during your stay and don’t want to go too far, you can visit the on-site restaurant, The Knot Bar which is in the lobby of the hotel. The enticing menu offers Scandinavian-inspired dishes and great cocktails throughout the day. The stylish décor features light wood tones, leather chairs and tables, as well as bright pops of color from flowers or plants on each table and also has views of the Columbia River.
The Bowline Hotel offers several unique amenities for guests including:
King-size beds in all rooms.
Large soaking tubs or walk-in showers, complete with bathrobes and slippers.
Gas fireplace, mini-fridge, and local teas & coffee in all rooms.
Grown Alchemist toiletries.
Outdoor patios and seating areas.
Earplugs just in case the local neighbors (the sea lions) get too loud! I didn’t hear the sea lions at night during my stay, but I loved that the hotel offered these.
Two beautiful barrel saunas that can be either dry or steam saunas.
Complimentary 1-hour bike rentals.
Outdoor firepits.
The Rooms
I stayed in the Luxe Trolley View King during my stay and the room had everything I needed and more! The bed was extremely comfortable, and the room had a living room seating area with a pull-out couch and was perfect for my friend and I. The River View rooms face the Columbia River, whereas the Trolley View rooms face the riverwalk where the Astoria trolley goes by during season. Another great thing about Bowline Hotel is that it’s a pet friendly hotel in Astoria, but keep in mind that pets are only allowed in rooms located on the 1st floor of the hotel.
Room options:
River or Trolley View King – these smaller rooms accommodate two guests and are about 300 sf with king size beds, walk-in showers, a fireplace, patios, a desk, and TV.
Luxe River or Trolley View King – these rooms are larger at about 400 sf and have all of the above features, except that they have a large soaking tub in place of the walk-in shower. The Luxe Trolley View King rooms have a pull-out couch so they can accommodate up to 4 guests.
River View Buoy Suite – located on the first floor, this is the largest room (475 sf) and is one of a kind! It sits in the corner of the building and has its own private balcony, large soaking tub, and separate double walk-in shower and all of the above features.
The Ice House – the Ice House is a separate building closest to the barrel saunas and there are two room options in the Ice House. There is a Luxe Ice House King which accommodates two guests and has the same features as the Buoy Suite. The other option is the Ice House Suit which is slightly larger and accommodates up to 4 guests when you utilize the full-size pull-out couch.
The Location
The Bowline Hotel is in a prime location and within walking distance to great restaurants, museums, and bars & breweries. My first morning at the hotel, I walked less than 10 minutes to Pier 11 to Riverwalk restaurant for an amazing breakfast. It’s located inside Pier 11 near Treasure Alley which is also worth spending some time wandering around. If you walk another 10-minutes, you’ll be at the Columbia River Maritime Museum and on your way back you can stop inside Frite + Scoop for artisan ice cream or French fries by the pound! One of the main and probably the coolest thing to see near Astoria is the wreck of the Peter Iredale in Fort Stevens State Park and it’s a quick 20-minute drive from Bowline Hotel. Location is always key for me during my travels, and Bowline Hotel is situated in the perfect location making it one of the best hotels in Astoria, Oregon!
Happy travels!
